FIRST FREE SURVEY

After a first inspection, technicians pointed out several damages in the curved facade of the external stairway block. Two portions showed several injuries and the risk of plaster detachment from the underlying support: a state of decay that we often notice in the external surfaces of buildings, mainly caused by the carbonation process of the cement conglomerate that determines the oxidation of the reinforcing rods.

During the first survey, we suggested security interventions to the façade in the most damaged corner portion. At the same time we proposed a further restoration work on the remaining area, because it also showed signs of widespread injuries.

On a second survey, technicians focused on another external area of the building, noticing deteriorated parts in the plaster. So they proposed an intervention plan in order to secure and restore the façade, recommending also the sealing of the joints of the parapet thresholds and the cleaning of the drips to avoid draining on the surfaces.

DESCRIPTION OF THE FACADE SECURITY WITH THE ROPE ACCESS

As for any other intervention, workers were provided with harnesses and all the appropriate safety equipments. In this case, they climbed down the surfaces and used an air valance consisting of metal tubing with a PVC sheet, in order to prevent the underlying area against the falling of plaster or any other material and not risk people’s safety.

The construction site was set up on the roof, after that all the necessary equipment was prepared for the operators, so that they can descend and work safely. The main anchorage was placed on load-bearing structures, while the secondary one on another structural element of the roof.

Rope access operators removed the dangerous parts and the detaching plaster, carrying out a stability check of the façade edge through a staking process. Only later they removed the damaged portions.

Finally the reinforced rods with an anti-rust passivation converter.
